Twin Oaks

Twin Oaks

Twin Oaks is an intentional community in rural central Virginia, made up of around 90 adult members and 15 children. Since the community’s beginning in 1967, our way of life has reflected our values of cooperation, sharing, nonviolence, equality, and ecology. We welcome you to schedule a visit.

We do not have a group religion; our beliefs are diverse. We do not have a central leader; we govern ourselves by a form of democracy with responsibility shared among various managers, planners, and committees. We are self-supporting economically, and partly self-sufficient. We are income-sharing. Each member works 42 hours a week in the community’s business and domestic areas. Each member receives housing, food, healthcare, and personal spending money from the community.

“I realize I have a deepening longing for community – for tribe. I am tired of wandering around in a city of disconnected strangers, chattering into the void on their cell phones, seeking weekend oblivion through booze. I can’t imagine what it would be like to live with 20 – 200 friends – people I actually care about – in a natural setting. It is so outside of my experience up to this point.

My friend Stephen Brooks has been building permaculture-based communities in Costa Rica. In a few weeks, we are going to hold a dialogue on how one can get started in creating a community for the future. What would be your ideal town? How would you go about raising the capital for it, and choosing your community members?
I suspect that the focus of many people will be turning in this direction in the next few years. What would be ideal, for me, would be to maintain both lives – spend some of my time in the urban jungle and some time in the real jungle. I am excited because, at the very least, I now have a five or ten year plan for my future. Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in this conversation!”

“Earthaven is where the human community
is bonding with the Earth in a manner
capable of healing the devastation of the past
and inspiring a new grandeur for the future.
At Earthaven, even for a brief while,
we experience what it is to return to ourselves.”
–Thomas Berry, author of The Dream of the Earth.

Avalon Organic Gardens & EcoVillage is located on 165 acres of rich farmland in the sacred Santa Cruz Valley of Southern, Arizona. We are a collective of kindred spirits united by a common vision. Being a spiritual intentional community as well as an ecovillage, our efforts to live in harmony with nature are rooted in our spiritual walk and recognition of the interconnectedness of all life.

Our “physical” sustainable practices include organic farming, permaculture principles, green building, water harvesting, carpooling, composting, and more. As important are our “non-physical” practices which encourage honest, loving, and respectful communication in order to create an emotionally and spiritually sustainable environment.
